About

A short note.

I'm Alasdair, a software engineer based in the UK, currently employed full-time as a senior SWE. I build software used by millions of people.

My day job tends to be varied and eclectic: probably what they call product engineering nowadays. Platforms that move serious money, replacing and upgrading legacy systems, performance work, development and editorial tooling and automation that people actually like using, auth, SSO and account migration for hundreds of thousands of users, data feed processing and visualisation, mobile, and lately a lot of work with AI and agentic workflows. Around the edges: CI and infrastructure, on call and site reliability, mentoring, interviewing.

On the side I like to tinker and build things I enjoy (have you been to sea?). Mostly React, React Native, Expo, Next, Astro, Node, TypeScript, Hono, Bun, Postgres and SQLite. I care about elegant systems: things that work well, look good and are no more complex than they need to be. Recently I shipped some apps under Mono Studio.

I enjoy self-hosting and using Linux boxes.

Away from the screen: motorcycles, wild camping, vinyl and gardening.
